- Local Services Ads charge per lead. Google Ads charge per click.
- With Local Services Ads, missed calls can cost you money and ranking.
- Many firms start with one and add the other once tracking is in place.
What Local Services Ads are
Local Services Ads (LSA) are the boxes at the very top of some searches, like “personal injury lawyer near me”. Each one shows the firm name, a rating, and a badge.
That badge changed recently. In October 2025 Google replaced the old “Google Screened” badge with one badge called Google Verified. For lawyers, getting verified still means checks on your business and an active bar license for each attorney.
The big difference: you pay per lead, not per click. A lead is a call, a message or a booking request from someone who found your ad.
What regular Google Ads are
Regular Google Ads (search ads) show up as text ads in the search results. You choose the searches you want to show up for, write the ads, and send people to a page on your site. You pay each time someone clicks, whether they contact you or not.
Side by side
| Local Services Ads | Google Ads (search) | |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | Each valid lead (call, message, booking) | Each click |
| Where people land | Your LSA profile, then they call or message | Your website page |
| Control over searches | Low: you pick case types and areas | High: you pick the exact searches |
| Setup | Verification, licenses, profile, reviews | Ads, landing pages, tracking |
| Ranking depends on | Reviews, responsiveness, location, hours, budget | Bids, ad quality, landing page |
How Local Services Ads charge you
Google’s help page lists what counts as a charged lead:
- Calls you answer, or callbacks where you speak with the person
- Missed calls during your business hours, if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds
- Messages, emails and voicemails
Some things are not charged: leads Google finds invalid at first contact, and repeat contact from the same person within 15 days. Google also gives credits automatically for some low-quality leads, and you can report bad leads from your dashboard.
Prices change by city, practice area and lead type. Personal injury is usually one of the most expensive areas. The only number that really matters is your own cost per signed case.
The missed-call trap
This is the most common LSA problem we see. Google says missed calls may hurt your “responsiveness”, which helps decide your ranking. So every missed call during business hours can cost you twice: you may pay for the lead, and you may show up less often.
Before you turn on LSA, make sure someone answers every call during the hours you list, and that messages get a reply quickly. If you can’t do that yet, set shorter hours.
Which one fits your firm?
Local Services Ads often fit better if:
- You are a small or mid-size firm with someone who answers the phone
- You already have good Google reviews
- You want leads without building landing pages first
Google Ads often fit better if:
- You want specific case types, like truck crashes, and not others
- You have strong landing pages for those case types
- You want to test messages and offers
Many firms run both. LSA brings in steady calls. Search ads fill gaps for the case types you want most. What matters is tracking both the same way, so you can compare cost per signed case.
Before you spend a dollar
